Studying Through Athletics: Athletic Scholarships in Europe

Studying Through Athletics: Athletic Scholarships in Europe

Only a limited number of institutions in Europe combine strong academics with structured support for student-athletes who want to continue competing at a high level. Although such programs are not widespread, our agency collaborates with one of the best — UCAM University in Spain, known for its strong focus on sports and sport-related studies.

What Does Studying Through Athletics in Europe Look Like?
  • The ability to pursue a degree while competing in your sport
  • Athletic scholarships for students who represent the university in competitions
  • Athletes across various disciplines (basketball, volleyball, soccer, track and field, taekwondo, etc.) can qualify for full funding
  • Programs delivered in English and/or Spanish
  • Full freedom to choose any academic major — athletes are not limited to sport-related programs
Who Is This Path Ideal For?
  • Active athletes who want to balance academic studies with their athletic career
  • Students interested in sports science, coaching, management, or rehabilitation
  • Students who are no longer competing competitively but wish to study sports-related fields (partial tuition discounts may be available)

UCAM is a strong example of how athletic ambition and high-level education can coexist. Our team helps students maximize both academic and athletic potential through this program.

Academic Freedom with an Athletic Focus

It’s important to highlight that athletes are not restricted to sport-specific majors. They have full freedom to choose programs in business, engineering, the arts, psychology, or any other field offered by the university.

Benefits for Student-Athletes

Student-athletes often have higher chances of receiving funding because they represent their institution at competitions. Universities invest in athletics due to the visibility, recognition, and community spirit that athletes bring.

Common sports for which students from our region receive scholarships include: basketball, volleyball, soccer, tennis, swimming, rowing, skiing, track and field, water polo, wrestling, archery, shooting, and more

How Athletic Recruitment Works

Unlike standard university applications, athletes do not choose a university independently — they enter a recruitment process in which coaches play the central role. A coach decides whether to offer an athletic scholarship based on:

  • Open roster spots
  • Team needs at a specific position
  • Whether the athlete fits the coach’s system and expectations
  • Available scholarship budget

In other words: even if you are an excellent athlete, receiving a scholarship depends on the coach’s current needs and the university’s capacity.

Academic & Administrative Requirements

In addition to athletic ability, candidates must meet academic standards:

  • Strong high school grades
  • Proof of English proficiency (Duolingo, TOEFL, IELTS)

These steps are necessary to receive clearance to compete under NCAA, NAIA, or other athletic associations.

When to Begin the Process?

The ideal time to start is at the beginning of your final year of high school — and in some cases, even earlier. Timing is crucial: the earlier you begin, the better your chances of receiving a strong offer.

Professional program

Undergraduate Studies in Europe

  • Four-year Bachelor’s programs → direct admission to a university or college → Bachelor’s degree
  • Most programs are available in English

Note on professional programs:
Fields such as medicine, dentistry, and law may require proficiency in the local language at some stage.

All students, including athletes, must meet academic requirements for admission. Athletes are free to choose any major, regardless of their sport. Due to the nature of athletic recruitment, timelines may vary — starting early makes a significant difference.

Application Process for Student-Athletes

If a student-athlete wants to begin the search for a university abroad, several key steps are required so that we can present them properly to universities and coaches.

Step 1: Collecting and Preparing Documents

  • Proof of athletic performance: official competition results + video highlights
  • Athlete CV
  • Personal statement
  • Recommendation letters (typically from English and math teachers, plus homeroom teacher or school principal)
  • English proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, or Cambridge)
  • Language certificate for programs taught in another language
  • High school transcripts from each grade
  • Official certified translations of transcripts
  • High school diploma
  • Copy of passport

Once the documents are ready, our team reaches out to universities and coaches to determine whether there is an open spot on the roster and whether the athlete fits the team’s needs.

If there is interest, the next steps include:

  • Completing and submitting the university application
  • Administrative processing of all documents
  • Preparing and submitting the student visa application
  • Coordinating all formalities related to enrollment and departure

Our role is to represent the athlete in the best possible way and guide them through the entire process — from first contact with universities to final enrollment and arrival on campus.
